Is Comoros Safe? Travel Advice, Visa and Local Customs

Is Comoros safe? We cannot say yes or no. Here is what governments publish, the visa fee range to confirm for your passport, malaria advice and the local rules to know.

  • Checked tours on all three islands
  • Flights, visas and safety explained
  • Island by island: Grande Comore, Anjouan, Moheli

Comoros visa: entry requirements

Official sources describe a Comoros visa on arrival at Moroni airport and the main entry points. The fee is a point on which sources disagree: France (15 September 2026) and the UK say about 30 euros, while the national tourist office (ONTC) and the US State Department (22 January 2026) say 30 to 50 euros. We do not settle it, so confirm the exact amount for your passport before you travel.

This page does not replace an official advisory. When people ask whether Comoros is safe, the honest answer is a summary of the warnings published, not reassurance that everything runs normally.

Visa, passport and onward ticket

What each source says.

France

For French tourists: visa on arrival at Moroni airport, about 30 euros. France mentions a return ticket, an address for your accommodation and funds of 30 euros a day.

Tourist office

Visa on arrival at the main airports and ports, about 30 to 50 euros, for 45 days and extendable. Passport valid for more than 6 months and a return or onward ticket. The information is undated and is not an individual confirmation.

UK and US

The UK asks for 6 months of validity on arrival and quotes 30 euros. The US gives 30 to 50 euros, payable in euros or US dollars. We do not convert these amounts.

We found no evidence of a mandatory online visa in 2026, nor of a rule that covers every nationality. Check your own foreign ministry. For the journey itself, see how to fly to Comoros.

Safety: official advisories and dates

Three governments, three messages of caution.

The US rates Comoros at Level 2, "exercise increased caution", in an advisory issued on 12 January 2026, citing crime, civil unrest and health. France published security advice on 15 September 2026, warning about volcanic risk, dangerous small boats and theft. The UK advises against walking at night and warns about overloaded or poorly equipped boats.

The official sources we read give no current volcano clearance and no general guarantee that everything is open for August to October 2026. Do not assume "everything is open". For Karthala, the Mount Karthala page repeats the French advice: an experienced guide is recommended, camping in the caldera is strongly discouraged, and CO2 and explosions are risks.

Health, customs and local rules

To prepare before you go.

Malaria and vaccines

The US CDC reports malaria risk throughout the country and advises prophylaxis decided with a doctor, plus mosquito protection. Hepatitis A and typhoid are among the recommended vaccines. The CDC lists no yellow fever recommendation or entry requirement; transit countries may have their own rules.

Alcohol, photos, Ramadan

There is no total alcohol ban: you can buy it in hotels, for example, but drinking on public roads is illegal. Ask before photographing people and do not photograph military or police buildings. During Ramadan, do not eat, drink or smoke in public in daytime.

Emergency numbers

According to the US guidance: police 17, fire 18, ambulance and general emergencies 772-03-73 or 773-26-04. The source does not guarantee availability or a fast response.

Dress in covered clothing, especially away from hotels. For cyclone season, read the best time to visit Comoros.
