Moroni, comoros capital city on the west coast
Moroni is the capital of the Union of the Comoros, on the west coast of Grande Comore. Many travellers spend their first night here, as Prince Said Ibrahim Airport serves the same island. You can explore the city on foot in pieces, but keep in mind that opening hours and access fees for sights are not published.
Its medina belongs to the Medinas of the Historic Sultanates of the Comoros, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2026. The inscription recognises the site. It does not promise that any house, palace or mosque is open to visitors.

Our take: a trip from the Moroni office
This day leaves from the operator's office in the Mtsangani district of Moroni; it is not a city walk.
Hand-picked tours, booked through Viator. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.
Guided Mount Karthala hike
From Moroni, the most famous excursion heads for the volcano. This guided hike with a local guide includes hotel pickup and drop-off, over about 8 hours.
The medina and the Friday Mosque
The tourism office lists the Great Friday Mosque among the island's historic buildings. We have no firm construction date, no interior visiting hours and no rule on access for non-Muslim visitors. Look from the outside, ask permission from people nearby before entering or taking photos, and dress to cover shoulders and knees.
The Volo-Volo market is named as a market of Moroni. No opening days or prices are confirmed. For context on the setting, Comoros history traces the sultanates and the colonial period. For the rest of the island, go to Grande Comore.
Jardin de la Paix: a hotel restaurant, not a park
The name causes confusion. The Jardin de la Paix in Moroni is a hotel with a restaurant, in the Ambassadeur district on Avenue Ahmed Djoumoi. It is not a public park or a free garden walk. The hours the business states, 7:00 to 23:00 for the restaurant, do not apply to a garden open to everyone. If you want green space, do not count on this place.
If you are looking for a bed or a meal near the centre, where to stay in the Comoros explains the types of lodging and what to confirm before booking.
Cash, distances and precautions in town
Cash dominates. France describes Moroni cash machines as unreliable, and cards are not taken everywhere. British guidance advises against walking at night. A guided day trip to the north of the island starts at an operator's office in the Mtsangani district, with lunch and a licensed guide speaking English and French. It is not a tour of Moroni and does not replace discovering the city.
How to plan a day in Moroni
Start in the morning, when it is cooler, with the old centre and its narrow streets, then keep the afternoon for the market or a break by the sea. Moroni has no official visiting calendar: places are found by walking and asking. Prefer daytime movement and avoid walking alone in the evening.
The city also serves as a base for the rest of the island. The volcano, the north and the beaches can all be reached by road from the capital. Allow slack for journeys, as road quality is uneven. If you arrive by air, getting there explains the known connections to the airport.
